Smoke Description

Descriptive text narrative for smoke/dust observed in satelite imagery through Aug. 12, 2024, 8:08 a.m.

SMOKE:
Canada/North Central and Northwestern CONUS - Smoke of varying density, ranging from moderate to thick density smoke continued to be observed blanketing much of Canada and portions of the northwestern CONUS. The parent wildfire activity remains across Northwest Canada, with some of the activity extending south across the Canadian Rockies and the Pacific Northwest, as well as across Central Saskatchewan. Thick density smoke continues to persist, with the active emissions from the wildfires observed over majority northern Canada, where the smoke continued to move northward through the Northwest Territory, then northeastward across majority Nunavut, and eastward across the northern region of the Hudson Bay. Other areas of thick density smoke were observed engulfing over central Saskatchewan southern Manitoba, California, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho.

Gulf of Mexico/Eastern CONUS/North Atlantic - Light remnant smoke was seen over portions of the Southeastern CONUS, Mexican Gulf Coastal Plain, Atlantic Ocean, and parts of the Gulf of Mexico. The source of this smoke is likely agricultural burning across the central and southern Plains and southeastern U.S. along with remnant smoke from the large wildfires out west. Several topical cyclone systems most likely allowed large areas of smoke to concentrate throughout portions of the Gulf of Mexico and into the eastern United States and the Northern Atlantic Ocean.

DUST: A moderate amount of Saharan Dust was seen traveling westward across the Atlantic Ocean and the eastern Caribbean Sea toward Puerto Rico.

What is a wildfire and how does it happen? ›

Wildfires can start from natural causes, such as lightning, but they are usually caused by humans, such as campers or hikers who did not put out their campfire properly. Wildfires spread quickly, burning brush, trees, and homes in its path.

What type of damage do wildfires cause? ›

Fire can cause long term damage to vegetation and remove critical root systems, allowing for following rainfall events to move large amounts of sediment and harmful concentrations of minerals/metals into water systems resulting in reduced operations or total loss of water and wastewater facilities.

What state has the most wildfires in 2024? ›
