Departments of Interest

From experience, we know that certain departments are of particular interest to international patients. A brief introduction to them is provided below:

Department of Internal Medicine II

The Department of Internal Medicine II, under director Professor Roland Schmid, specializes in diagnostic testing, nonsurgical treatments and the prevention of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (general gastroenterology). Gastrointestinal oncology, hepatology, endocrinology, diabetology and infectious diseases are further specialisms. The team of more than 60 physicians also has special experience in the treatment of liver, biliary tract and pancreatic diseases, tumor therapy, internal intensive medicine, and complex endoscopic procedures. Additional information in English language can be found on the dedicated website of the Department of Internal Medicine II.

Department of Internal Medicine III

The Department of Internal Medicine III, under director Professor Florian Bassermann, specializes in hematology and oncology. An experienced medical team is dedicated to the treatment of cancer patients and patients with disorders of the blood and lymphatic system, such as leukemia, multiple myeloma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and Hodgkin's lymphoma. More than 30 specialists and about 40 nurses care for patients by relying on the latest therapeutic concepts, including chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation.

Department of Surgery

The Department of Surgery, under director Professor Helmut Friess, has gained an excellent reputation, both nationally and internationally, for surgery to the esophagus, stomach, liver and pancreas (abdominal surgery). Its specialist medical teams perform all types of surgery to the highest of medical standards. In doing so, the surgeons employ minimally invasive, endoscopic techniques, wherever possible. Keyhole surgery requires particular precision and experience. Patients benefit from small incisions, less pain after surgery, and a distinctly faster recovery.

Department of Nephrology

The Department of Nephrology, under director Professor Uwe Heemann, treats patients with kidney diseases, diabetic kidney damage, autoimmune/rheumatic diseases, high blood pressure, electrolyte disorders, adrenal gland and parathyroid dysfunction, and disorders of the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland. It also specializes in kidney transplantation and patients with transplant rejection, who can be treated with antibody therapy, for example. The experienced physicians at the department work with state-of-the-art equipment, while using innovative diagnostic and therapeutic methods and considering the latest research results.

Department of Nuclear Medicine

The Department of Nuclear Medicine is an international well-known center for all diagnostic and therapeutic Nuclear Medicine procedures. The PET center has a modern PET/CT and a PET/MR scanner providing service for all indications in oncology, neurology and cardiology. A special focus is the use of theranostic PET-agents targeting PSMA (prostate specific membrane antigen: 68Ga-PSMA and 18F-PSMA) and SSR (somatostatin receptor: 68Ga-DOTANOC). Our ward offers treatments for different thyroid disorders (thyroid cancer, benign thyroid conditions) and radionuclide therapies for neuroendocrine cancers (PRRT), prostate cancer (177Lu-PSMA, 225Ac-PSMA, 223Radium), liver metastases (SIRT) and pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma (MIBG). An outpatient clinic specializes on state of the art diagnosis and treatment of all thyroid disorders and offers the full spectrum of scintigraphies (e.g. myocardial stress test, renal und lung scintigrapy).

Department of Neurosurgery

The Department of Neurosurgery, under director Prof Bernhard Meyer, has four state-of-the-art operating rooms and three wards, plus monitoring units and intensive therapy unit. The team specializes in brain tumors that are difficult to reach, such as gliomas, metastatic tumors, Skull base tumors and Pituitary tumors, and is familiar with the latest microsurgical techniques. An amalgamation of the Department of Neurosurgery with other departments of the University Hospital rechts der Isar creates a neuro-oncology center accredited by the German Cancer Society. The neurosurgeons work closely with other specialists from the hospital to ensure that cancer patients receive the best possible interdisciplinary care. The Department also specializes in spinal surgery, with its own accredited spine center, along with vascular neurosurgery and pediatric neurosurgery.

Department of Orthopedics

The Department of Orthopedics, under director Professor Rüdiger von Eisenhart-Rothe, offers treatment for any type of disorder in the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons in line with the latest diagnostic and therapeutic standards. The medical team has wide-ranging experience, also of rare or very complicated diseases or injuries. The Department of Orthopedics is an accredited center for joint replacement surgery (endoprosthetics) and one of the largest European centers for treating bone and soft-tissue tumors. Further specialisms are joint preservation, foot orthopedics, septic orthopedics, orthopedic rheumatology and pediatric orthopedics. As a university hospital with a strong focus on research, we incorporate new scientific findings into our concepts as quickly as possible to the benefit of patients. This applies not only to orthopedics, but every other department of the hospital.

Department of Sports Orthopedics

The Department of Sports Orthopedics, under director Professor Sebastian Siebenlist, is an independent unit belonging to the Department of Orthopedics that treats all types of sports injuries. Given its extensive experience and outstanding technical capabilities, the Department of Sports Orthopedics specializes in the treatment of competitive athletes. The department focuses, among others, on the surgical treatment of acute musculoskeletal injuries and degenerative joint damage, especially in the joints of the knees, shoulders, elbows and ankles. The primary goal is to restore the function of a damaged joint. With this in mind, the specialists employ reconstructive methods and minimally invasive surgical techniques. This permits early mobilization and thus ensures that physical fitness is restored as quickly as possible.

Department of Ophthalmology

The Department of Ophthalmology, under the acting director Professor Mathias Maier, treats every type of eye disorder and offers the whole range of outpatient and inpatient eye procedures. Owing to many years of experience, precise diagnostic techniques, modern technology, established and innovative treatments, and considerable personal commitment, the University Hospital ophthalmology department guarantees its patients the best possible medical care. The range of services covers tear duct disorders, traumatology, diseases of the ocular surface, (including dry eye), refractive surgery, diabetic retinal changes, corneal transplantation, cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, retinal detachment, pediatric and neuro-ophthalmology, orthoptics, eyelid disorders, and plastic surgery on the eyelids.

Department of Urology

The Department of Urology, under director Professor Jürgen E. Gschwend, has five state-of-the-art operating rooms and two wards, plus monitoring unit and access to intensive therapy unit. The urology team specializes in Genitourinary Oncology treating all tumors of prostate, bladder, kidney, testis and penis including highest level of surgery and systemic treatments. We use microsurgical conventional, laparoscopic and robotic surgery. The Department of Urology is a center of excellence of the German Cancer Society for prostate cancer (ProstaTUM) and is in close interaction with other departments of the University Hospital rechts der Isar to ensure that cancer patients receive the best possible interdisciplinary care. The Department also specializes in high level endoscopic procedures for benign prostate surgery and urinary stone disease (Mini-endoscopes, Laser application, bipolar and monopolar devices).

All-round Care at Interdisciplinary Centers

By working closely together, specialists from the different medical disciplines develop a therapeutic concept that is customized to meet the specific needs of each patient. One of our centers is theComprehensive Cancer Center Munich TUM, which is dedicated to cancer research and therapy. It is part of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Munich (CCCM), one of Germany's 13 oncology centers of excellence supported by German Cancer Aid.
