Alia Bhatt reveals which film role had the greatest impact on her growth as an actor
Alia Bhatt, whose film 'Jigra', releases in cinemas today, revealed which performance brought the biggest change in her as a performer.
"I think the first film where I felt a significant shift in my personality was the film ‘Highway’. Maybe it was because I was on the road for so long, away from home. The first time I really had an experience like that was like going away to college but only my college was a film set."
She continued: "Perhaps after that, it was a film like ‘Udta Punjab,’ which was a character that made me very uncomfortable. But I think this is the first and only film that I have gone method on. I actually physically shut down from the rest of the world, emotionally shut down for the time period that I was shooting the film.”
She then said “Gangubai Kathiawadi,” which Alia said the she was the same actor after she walked off that set, only because of the experience.
Alia added: “It was being directed by Mr. Sanjay Leela Bhansali and you’re never the same actor after you’re directed by him."

But I couldn’t; it is not easy for me to come in and out of character. It did impact my mental health a bit.”
Reflecting on the first day of filming, Vedang recounted, “On the very first day, I was to shoot a rather emotionally intense scene, and I shut myself in my vanity, put the lights off, switched off my phone, and told people to just leave me alone—I sat there listening to my music. Now, as luck would have it, the shot was supposed to happen at 3pm but got delayed and we started rolling around 8 pm. So, I was in that self-imposed solitary confinement for about 8 long hours, and it really started impacting me.”

Alia Bhatt's 'Jigra' is set to release today and it sees the actress in a fierce avatar who is ready to do anything in order to protect her brother (Vedang Raina). The trailer and songs which released have created a good buzz around the movie, but it's largely a niche film. Alia will display her lady Bachchan, 'angry young woman' avatar in this one which is directed by Vasan Bala. The film is also co-produced by Alia along with Karan Johar. Since the film is made on a moderate budget, it should be expected to recover its costs soon. Hence, one did not even expect a bumper opening for the film, the way one expects those bigger numbers for bigger movies. Alia is seen pulling off some hardcore action in this one. 'Jigra' comes after the success of 'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani' for Alia, though, this Karan Johar directorial was the quintessential big ticket movie with an elaborate cast.
'Jigra' clashes with Rajkummar Rao, Triptii Dimri starrer 'Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video' which is a quirky comedy and may appeal more to the single screen, mass centres, especially in tier two and three cities. This comes for Rajkummar after the success of 'Stree 2'. Both these movies may have an average opening and are at par at the moment. But positive word of mouth will largely decide the fate of these movies and if they will be able to pull the audience to the screens, not just over the weekend but also in the coming week. 'Vicky Vidya Ka woh Wala Video' is directed by Raaj Shaandilyaa of 'Dream Girl' fake and also stars Mallika Sherawat.
Time will tell which of these movies will beat the other at the box office, of if there's enough room for both. As of now, the ongoing Navratri has also dampened the spirit of people going to the theatres but the Dussehra weekend may bring in the much needed growth in the business of all these movies.
Both these movies are facing competition from Jr NTR's 'Devara: Part 1' and Rajinikanth's film 'Vettaiyan' which also stars Amitabh Bachchan. These two legends are seen together on screen after a while and clearly, the south areas will be dominated by these films tha the newer releases. However, both 'Jigra' and 'Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video' have an open window at the box office, until Diwali now till 'Singham Again' and 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3' clash with each other. Till then, there's no other major release.
