Man Utd transfer news live Fernandes contract and De Ligt deal agreed (2024)

Hello and welcome to your dedicated Manchester United transfers blog. The Manchester Evening News will have you covered at every step with the latest news, views and rumours from Old Trafford and beyond.

It has been a hectic 24 hours for United on and off the pitch. Shortly before the Community Shield defeat, against Manchester City on Saturday afternoon, a double deal with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich was agreed.

Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt are expected to touch down at Old Trafford soon. They will cost £17million and £41million, respectively, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka closing in on a departure, amid reports from Fabrizio Romano that Bruno Fernandes has agreed a new contract to extend his stay at United until 2027.

The former Crystal Palace man is West Ham bound for around £15million. He might not be the only player to leave United this summer, either, amid ongoing question marks around Victor Lindelof, Casemiro and Jadon Sancho with reports from Give Me Sport also flagging up proposed interest from Real Madrid in right-back Diogo Dalot.

Scott McTominay is also being tracked by Fulham and they have made three offers for him. As for further signings, Brighton starlet Evan Ferguson is being mooted with a surprise £50million switch, too.

Erik ten Hag shares Casemiro transfer update

It wouldn't have been beyond question to see Casemiro leave Old Trafford this summer.

However, when speaking to the media at Wembley on Saturday afternoon, United manager Erik ten Hag offered up an update on the Brazil star who he expects to stay put amid transfer interest from Saudi Arabia and other lucrative markets;

Case has had a pre-season so he's very fit in this moment. As a team, we work very good together, that makes it easier for Case. He's a great football player and he can bring his skills in and you say he's important for the game for our team. I don't have any idea or signal if not [that he could leave]. We are very happy with him.

25 goal target set for strikers

Former United striker Andy Cole has set a target of 25 goals for Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee this season.

Speaking to Betfred, he said:

“Everybody needs a full pre-season. When you miss a pre-season, or you miss a couple of weeks, you’re always going to be playing catch up. When you go into the season playing catch up, then it becomes a little bit difficult because everybody else is a couple of weeks in front of you.

“Against Arsenal in pre-season, Rasmus looked fit and strong coming back from the Euros and those are his assets anyway because he’s a physical, old fashioned centre-forward. I spoke to him briefly and he’s looking forward to the new season. There’s no doubt that he just wants to go out there and score as many goals as possible. Manchester United for a while haven’t had a striker that has scored 25 goals in a season, so it has to be one of Rasmus or Zirkzee or the pair of them could hopefully get 15 goals each and then you have others chipping in around them. "

Casemiro staying could affect another deal

With Ten Hag confident that Casemiro will be staying at Old Trafford it is difficult to see how the Reds will be able to complete a deal for PSG's Manuel Ugarte.

The Uruguayan wants to move to Old Trafford and he is on United's radar but without money coming in from midfield player sales, it is difficult to see how the Reds would be able to drum up the funds to sign Ugarte permanently.

PSG may be open to a loan move considering Joao Neves has joined them and this now appears the only way to get the midfielder through the door.

What Ten Hag had to say about United's defence

Following the defeat on penalties to City in the Community Shield, Ten Hag was asked by reporters about his defence ahead of the imminent arrivals of De Ligt and Mazraoui.

It’s clear we have the problems and we have to work, the players have to work to be available and the staff have to work. Together it should be a good collaboration with the players who are available.

Wan-Bissaka development green lights next transfer

With Wan-Bissaka set for his medical at the London Stadium tomorrow, United can now press ahead with the next transfer after De Ligt.

Mazraoui's arrival at Old Trafford has been dependent on Wan-Bissaka being sold and with that move in its final stages now, the Reds have got the green light to push ahead for the Moroccan.

De Ligt and Mazraoui do not feature for Bayern

Unsurprisingly considering their impending exits to United, neither De Ligt nor Mazraoui featured for Bayern against Spurs this evening.

The Bavarian club beat Tottenham 3-2 in North London but both defenders were unused substitutes for the fixture.

Bayern fans unhappy to see De Ligt go

While Scholes is concerned United could be signing a 'second rate' defender this summer, it appears the Bayern fanbase are concerned that De Ligt will be leaving the club.

In July, the Munich fanbase launched a petition to try and keep the defender at the club. The petition has more than 70,000 signatures to date.

The appeal on the petition reads:

We all want Matthijs de Ligt to stay at FC Bayern Munich! He has proven that he‘s a world class defender, probably the best in our squad. There is a reason why he was elected as our best player in the 2022/23 season. Furthermore he is only 24 years old and has a bright future ahead, which he is going to use to fulfill his huge potential. Despite his young age, Mattha is already very mature and has a great mentality which will definitely make him a leading figure in defence and probably a competitor for captaincy in some years. His ability to speak English, German and Dutch fluently would help him a lot for that. With 19 years he already brought Ajax Amsterdam to the UCL semi finals as captain. Selling Matthijs de Ligt would be an absolutely horrible decision and we would definitely regret it. That‘s why we use our voice to call attention that we will NOT make this mistake!

The English defender is closing in on a transfer to West Ham.

What Ten Hag said after defeat

Ten Hag has spoken to ITV Sport after losing the Community Shield and he was pleased with how his team played against City.

Yes that is definitely tough to take. We have to take this, you have to feel pain now as it will give us more motivation to do better. I think we could have been further ahead. We managed to be on an equal level with City. We put pressure on the ball and in position we were overloading in midfield. We had some great spells and made chances from those positions.

Why United would want Ferguson

At 19, Ferguson fits the profile of striker that United would want to add to their squad.

Even as a teenager, Ferguson has incredible strength and his stature is that of a player older than him.

He had a difficult season last year which ended early in April due to an ankle injury.

In 27 Premier League appearances, Ferguson scored six goals including a hat-trick against Newcastle.

United 'preparing' £50m bid for Ferguson

According to the Daily Star, United are preparing to launch a late £50m offer for Brighton and Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson.

It is believed the Reds are concerned Chelsea will swoop in for the Republic of Ireland international meaning they would be open to making an approach for the striker this window.

Dan Ashworth knows Ferguson well and was behind the deal to sign the centre-forward during his time at the Amex.

Scholes concerned about De Ligt deal

Earlier this week, United legend Paul Scholes provided a word of caution about Ten Hag's pursuit of De Ligt and expressed doubts that he is the answer to the defensive issues.

He told The Overlap's Fan Debate:

With Man United, we’re talking about players who can’t get into their team. He’s [De Ligt] not playing for them [Bayern], that has to be a big concern, especially when Eric Dier is playing in front of him. That is a massive concern for me. When you’re bringing in players for £40m-£50m just because he’s played for him two or three years ago. Juventus got rid of him, he wasn’t good enough there and he obviously hasn’t been good enough at Bayern Munich. He’s coming to us almost like a second-rate defender.

Half-time in the Community Shield

De Ligt offer accepted

So the big news, other than the events at Wembley, is that United have had an offer of £42m accepted for De Ligt.

The Bayern defender has been out of favour in Bavaria and the Reds have offered him the opportunity to rediscover his form at Old Trafford.

De Ligt is a player Ten Hag knows well having coached him during his time at Ajax.
